Use these prompts when planning a story session. The class team knows its pupils best; adaptations should follow each child’s established support.
Before the session
- Share the session sequence and changes in advance.
- Identify a quiet space and familiar adult pupils can access.
- Check seating, movement, hearing, vision, and sensory needs.
- Prepare visual choices, vocabulary, and communication supports.
- Agree how pupils can request a break or opt out.
During activities
- Give one instruction at a time and allow processing time.
- Model an example before expecting independent work.
- Offer writing, drawing, speaking, selecting, acting, or observing as valid participation.
- Avoid requiring eye contact, reading aloud, or personal disclosure.
- Use specific praise for effort, ideas, listening, and collaboration.
Afterwards
- Offer extra time to finish or revisit the activity.
- Provide a predictable ending and explain what happens next.
- Invite staff feedback on what supported engagement.
